Tuesday's primaries for California governor and Los Angeles mayor feature unpopular Democratic front-runners. In the governor's race, Democrat Xavier Becerra leads crowded polls and appears likely to face Trump-backed Republican Steve Hilton in a general election matchup. A new poll shows voters are closely divided among three candidates vying to succeed Gov. Gavin Newsom at a perilous moment in history for the state and the nation. The Associated Press has not yet called the primary for any of the candidates.

Voters in six US states are casting primary ballots that will set the battle lines for November’s midterm elections. Tuesday is one of the busiest primary days of the year with voting under way in Iowa, Montana, New Mexico, New Jersey, South Dakota and California. The most watched races included New Jersey where a Democrat could oust a Republican incumbent absent with a mystery medical issue; and Iowa, where several Democrats are hoping to flip their red-leaning state. All 74 seats in the US House of Representatives are on the ballot today.

Oil prices rose for a third day as a fresh exchange of strikes between the US and Iran cast doubt on the prospects of a peace deal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. bombed radar and drone sites in Iran after Tehran shot down an American drone over the weekend. Iran then said it targeted American soldiers in Kuwait with missiles, which the U.S., says it shot down. In the meantime, Iran has maintained its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global energy supplies and driving up the price of fuel around the world. A cargo ship came under attack off Iraq Monday afternoon. Fighting escalated between Israel and Hezbollah, despite their nominal ceasefire. Tensions flared in Israel’s separate-but-related fight against the Iranian-backed militia Hezbollah in Lebanon. The US military launched strikes on an Iranian facility in response to Iranian strikes on Kuwait and Bahrain.

The Senate returns from the Memorial Day recess on Monday. Republicans are waiting for the Trump administration to weigh in on the Anti-Weaponization Fund.

Trump administration is backing down from its plan to use nearly $1.8 billion to pay people who say they were wrongly investigated or prosecuted. A federal judge in Virginia temporarily enjoined the government from transferring any money into the “Anti-Weaponization Fund’ and processing any claims. Republicans are angry about the amount of money that could be used for political purposes, especially those who took part in the Capitol assault on January 6, 2021. The Justice Department issued a statement saying it "disagrees strongly" with the judge's decision but would abide by it.

The U.S. proposed new tariffs of up to 12.5% on imports from 60 economies, including Canada, Japan, Norway, Taiwan and China, on the grounds of forced labour. The US Supreme Court ruled in February that the president’s ‘liberation day’ tariffs were illegal.

Trump administration proposes additional tariffs of 10% or 12.5% on imports from 60 economies, including the European Union and the United Kingdom. The move comes ahead of the July 24 expiry of temporary tariffs imposed after Trump's IEEPA tariff regime was struck down in February. Six economies would face an additional 10% tariff for allegedly failing to effectively enforce existing restrictions on imports made with forced labour. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer: "The failure of our most important trading partners to address the importation of goods made with Forced Labour is unacceptable"

Zach Lahn won the Republican primary for governor in Iowa. Randy Feenstra, Trump's endorsed candidate, was defeated by Lahn.

Zach Lahn won Iowa's Republican gubernatorial primary over President Donald Trump's pick, Rep. Randy Feenstra. The narrow upset Tuesday revealed cracks in Trump's coalition in the deep-red state. Republicans have not lost a gubernatorial race in Iowa since George W. Bush was president. In the two decades since a Democrat last won the governorship, in 2006, Iowa has gone from presidential battleground to reliably red-state terrain. This year's election is a test case of how far the president's blessing and the sway of partisan identity can carry a candidate over the finish line.

There was a massive drone attack on the Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka oil refinery in Volgogradsk, Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the drones had hit the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal and the Kronstadt military base.

Ukraine carried out a large-scale drone attack inside Russia overnight (Wednesday) and hit St. Petersburg oil terminal, Kronstadt naval base and shipyard in Leningrad oblast. Pulkovo Airport imposed temporary restrictions on operations and more than 30 flights were delayed or canceled. About 20,000 visitors from 130 countries are expected to attend the three-day annual summit.

On Tuesday, Iowa voters cast their ballots in heated primaries. The primary result capped a day of voting in a state that has drawn rare national attention this cycle.

Josh Turek and Zach Wahls are running for Iowa's Democratic Senate nomination in Tuesday's primary election. The winner is expected to face Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson in a race that could help determine Senate control this fall. It's been 18 years since a Democrat won a U.S. Senate seat in Iowa. Democrats want to win back control of both the US House of Representatives and the Senate. President Trump's approval ratings are low, gas prices high and historical political trends favor the party out of power.

Trump called Netanyahu after Iran threatened to end the negotiations with the US over Israel's attacks on Lebanon. The relationship between the two leaders has been closer to that of an agent and his handler.

Iran wants to cut off negotiations with the United States until that conflict is frozen. Donald Trump called Benjamin Netanyahu “f***ing crazy” during a Monday phone call, but he insists they work well together. President Trump confirmed to The Post's Miranda Devine that he did indeed call Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "f–king crazy".

Trump appointed Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence. He is already the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and chairman of mortgage groups Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Bill Pulte has been appointed as the new acting director of national intelligence. He will replace Tulsi Gabbard, who resigned last month to attend to her husband's cancer-stricken health. Some critics question his qualifications for the job because he doesn't have any known national security or intelligence experience. The Senate has been slow to confirm some appointees and is currently gummed up on other business. Donald Trump has in the past shown little eagerness to fill roles.
